Area information
Stroll into the nearby historic town of Russell and walk under the beautiful pohutukawa trees of the waterfront, past restaurants, cafes and shops. Learn about the first printing press and admire the showplace gardens at Pompallier Mission, visit the oldest church in New Zealand with its headstones that tell their own stories of times past, or visit the Russell museum where the early history of the village is so well documented (www.russellnz.co.nz).
Stroll onto the town’s pier to catch one of the frequent ferries for the 15-minute ride across the Bay to the sweeping cliff top grounds around the Waitangi Treaty House, where the founding document of modern New Zealand was drafted, negotiated and signed between native Maori and British in 1840 (www.waitangi.net.nz). On the 506 ha. Waitangi estate you can walk through the native bush, take guided tours, or plan a game of golf amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Waitangi golf course, with very reasonable green fees (www.waitangigolf.co.nz). You might prefer us to contact Claire for a horse ride at sunset (www.horsetrekn.co.nz) or just book for one of the many daily trips that local companies offer. The choices are plentiful – from fishing, diving and sailing around the many islands of the bay, to a bus ride or fly/drive tour of 90-mile beach, Cape Reinga and haunting Spirits’ Bay (www.dophincruises.co.nz or www.greatsights.co.nz).
